Osteopathy is a type of alternative medicine that was developed 150 years ago by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in America. An osteopath treats the patient as a whole and aims to find the cause of the disease rather than focussing on symptoms.
Our bodies consist of innumerable structures that are directly or indirectly connected. A very important connection is the fascia, the connective tissue. Fascia connects all the structures in the body and transmits forces from one structure to another according to the principles of tensegrity. This is the reason why an area of tension in one part of the body can lead to symptoms elsewhere.
In order to function properly, each body part, each organ needs sufficient freedom of movement. One of the aims of osteopathic treatment is to restore mobility in order to ensure optimal function. Osteopaths always try to locate the cause of the problem and not only treat symptoms. By removing blockages and tension the self-healing mechanism of the body is activated and the body can come back into balance.
Blockages and tension in the body arise from various causes:
- wrong movement patterns
- bad posture (prolonged sitting)
- falls, accidents
- operations
- scar tissue
- emotional distress
- trauma
Osteopaths treat many different types of conditions
Osteopathic techniques are used to treat and support the healing process of various diseases and ailments occurring in all age groups.
For example:
- Back and joint pains

Ayurveda, Yoga & Meditation combined with Osteopathy
Yoga and Ayurveda are interrelated branches of knowledge originating in India approximately 5000 years ago. Like osteopathy they are based on a holistic view of health and the human being as made up of a unit of body, mind and soul.
Together, osteopathy, Yoga and Ayurveda complement each other ideally:
- The manual techniques of osteopathy gently restore balance in the body of the patient.
- Ayurvedic diet and plant remedies support the patient in their individual constitution to find an optimal level of health.
- Yoga and meditation techniques calm the mind (emotions and thoughts) and allow the body to become stronger and flexible. With a regular individualised practice patients can help maintain and increase their sense of well-being.
Appointments
Appointments for an osteopathic treatment can be made by telephone or email. The first appointment takes approximately one hour and consists of a detailed discussion of the patient's case history, an examination and treatment for the presenting problem. Please bring along any existing medical reports from previous examinations or treatments. The osteopath is a primary health care practitioner and will give you a medical as well as an osteopathic, alternative medicine diagnosis.
In most cases the treatment is covered by the complementary health care plan of your health insurance. You normally do not need a prescription from the doctor (please check with your personal insurance).
Currently we not able to accept any more new Helsana-Patients. Patients with Helsana insurance will be treated as self-paying patients.
