Hatha Yoga Open Class with Elisabeth
Origin and Background
The origin of Yoga is shrouded in mystery and lies in the ancient Vedic culture of India. Already in the Bhagavad Gita around 5000 years ago, Krishna taught Arjuna about the different paths of Yoga to attain the state of inner peace, bliss and consciousness.
One of these paths, the 8-fold path of Yoga, was explained by Patanjali in the
Yoga Sutras approximately 2000 years ago.
The 8-fold path of Yoga
Yama
Niyama
Asana
Pranayama
Pratyahara
Dharana
Dhyana
Samadhi
In Europe and other Western countries, Yoga is mainly known as a physical exercise practice called hatha yoga. Hatha yoga consists of asanas (body exercises) and pranayamas (breathing exercises).
Dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) und samadhi (complete dissolution in stillness and bliss) are the advanced stages of this yoga path.
There are various styles of hatha yoga:
Often the styles are rooted in certain traditions and named after a famous teacher, such as Sivananda or Iyengar Yoga (in these styles the postures tend to be held statically over a period of time).
In other cases, a teacher names a yoga style, such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga Yoga (in these styles the postures are coordinated with the breath and performed in a flowing sequence).
In Aditya we are mainly inspired by the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya, which was further developed by his son T.K.V. Desikachar and is also used in yoga therapy and individualised practices. In the group classes the breath is central and there are flowing sequences as well as static postures.
The yoga courses help to improve our posture and body awareness, while increasing the harmony between the body, breath and mind. The muscles are strengthened and the fascia is stretched and mobilised. At the same time we learn to coordinate the body with the breath and find stillness within.
